NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA FRAKTUR TAUFSCHEIN
Fraktur Taufschein for Simon Straser
Watercolor and ink on paper
Chapman Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania
1811
Condition: even toning, scattered foxing
Large central heart with birth and baptismal information, surrounded by large tulips and birds, and with smaller hearts in the lower corners. In a later curly maple and cherry frame. 15” high, 18” wide (overall).
Simon Straser (aka Strausser, 1811-1865) is recorded in the genealogical record as having been born in August of 1811 in Chapman Township in Snyder County, although the fraktur indicates that Chapman Township is in neighboring Northumberland County. Despite this inconsistency, the rest of the family information on the fraktur is confirmed by the genealogical record: his father was Johan Nicholas Strausser III (1782-1823) and his mother was Christiana Rebecca Burkhart Strausser (1784-1852).
Simon remained in Chapman County for the rest of his life, marrying Susannah Catharine Hockmeister (1809-1890) and having numerous children.
