Pair of Sibling Fraktur Taufschein
Watercolor and ink on paper
Earl Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania
c. 1860
Condition: toning, wrinkling, taped along top margin, minor marginal losses and damage
Each with central text surrounded by stenciled tulips, including a very large tulip at top. In modern, grain-painted frames, 13” high, 11” wide (overall).
Made for brothers E. Davis and Elmore Schaeffer, born in 1855 and 1857, respectively, the use of stencils in the creation of these fraktur is unusual. The Schaeffer family (including mother Mary, the two brothers, and little sister Ella) were still living in Earl Township at the time of the 1870 census.
Provenance
Paul and Barbara Carpenter, Ohio – sold at Garth’s Auctions, October 1997, lot 301
