PENNSYLVANIA OR VIRGINIA FRAKTUR TAUFSCHEIN
Fraktur Taufschein for Catharina Staufer
Watercolor and ink on paper
Condition: even toning, trimmed and mounted on period laid paper
A central heart and tulip, and a checkered border, and made for Catharina Staufer, baptized September 30, 1813.
This fraktur was attributed to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia by Bill Samaha, though we are unable to confirm. We have found a Catherine Stover (a common Anglicization of the name Staufer) born August 18, 1813 in Augusta County, Virginia, as well as a Catarina Stover born on August 29, 1813 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Both of these girls were born at such a time that a September 30 baptism would be logical.
